Allocation of Hours
40 hours instruction and supervised teaching (actual course hours)
10 hours observation of classes taught ideally by a STOTT PILATES Instructor but if not available other classes will suffice. Observation of the DVDs supplied on the course will also be acceptable and this work is the responsibility of student done in their own time
30 hours physical review which is where the student practices the exercises and perfects their own exercise technique outside class time
15 hours practice teaching of colleagues, classmates again outside class time
8 hours anatomy tuition
All these stages are critical in the training of a Certified STOTT PILATES Instructor.
Examinations are not taken during or at the end of STOTT PILATES Courses and the reason for this is that students will require sufficient time to practice their own technique and teaching in advance of the exam.
A list of examination slots are provided on an ongoing basis one of which can be booked by the student. The exam must be taken within six months of the course.
Other options in relation to exams would include enrolling on another course in advance of the six month deadline following which one exam could be taken to examine both courses with one exam fee only to be paid.
The exams to be taken are as follows
Multiple choice written test (90 short questions)
Examines the student’s knowledge of anatomy, understanding and sequence of pilates exercises and case studies where sample clients are given and the student asked to recommend exercises which would be suitable for the client
Consists of the student teaching a “client” (normally another student) a full workout for 60 minutes under the direction of the STOTT PILATES Instructor Trainer Examiner
An average score of 80% is required to obtain a pass grade in both written and practical while the lowest score in either exam must be 75%. For example if the student scored 85% in the practical exam they would gain an overall pass mark by scoring 75% or higher in the written exam.
There are two STOTT PILATES Mat Courses available
- Extended Mat Course (for students without a working knowledge of movement and applied anatomy/biomechanics or for health fitness professional who may have qualified many years previous and who wish to revise their movement anatomy knowledge. This course includes extra hours for anatomy tuition.
- Intensive Mat Course (for students who have a formal background in movement and applied anatomy/biomechanics and who are comfortable with the terminology and language which is associated with these areas
Irrespective of which course the student is enrolling for, they are required to have had exposure to pilates class participation and some practice of the STOTT PILATES Mat workout as supplied on DVD prior to the course at enrolment stage (30 hours in total e.g. 20 hours pilates class/10 hours practice with DVD).

Numbers on Courses
Pilates is a discipline which demands high levels of supervision and correction and without this the techniques become ineffective and in some cases dangerous. As a result there is a strict maximum of twelve student on the STOTT PILATES Intensive or Extended Mat Courses in order to maintain the highest quality of delivery.
What do our previous students think? Feedback from some previous students is outlined below
As a specialised fitness professional I was looking for a Pilates course that was “best in class”, which STOTT PILATES provided. The training was challenging and it gave me a highly credible qualification, recognized worldwide. STOTT PILATES after course support helps keep me to keep up to date with news and views as well as providing motivation as an instructor. Regular workshops allow me to maintain my certification at the same time as learning new techniques, providing information on pilates for special population clients as well as networking with my peers.
